While hiking with Dan in the Hills of Pyati Gorsk in the Caucases, or perhaps it was along the banks of the voluminous Volga in Volgograd (Stalingrad), I just so happened to be holding his hat, for some reason or other. The hat was a black 1920's teamster type very typically worn by any normal slightly-conservative unpretentious Russian male of Dan's age, perhaps an attempt to blend in with the Russians and travel incognito so as to observe real local life without being noticed as a foreigner. In any case, while holding this hat, whose silhouette along with Dan is now a personal iconic figure etched into the mental images of my Southern Russian journey with the fabled Dan (much like Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys), I noticed that the size was smaller than mine, a modest 7 inches. Having already been exposed to his political knowledge among other things, I immediately thought, "How does one cram so much information into such a small noggin?
