      • About Me:

I am the author of the Hannibal Jones Mystery Series (Collateral Damage, The Troubleshooter, Damaged Goods and Blood and Bone) and the Stark and O’Brien thrillers (The Payback Assignment and The Orion Assignment.) I'm also a public affairs specialist for the Defense Department. America's military people know him because for more than a decade his radio and TV news reports were transmitted to them daily on the American Forces Network.

I was born in New York City but grew up in Saratoga Springs, NY. I majored in psychology at Union College in Schenectady, NY. After 3 years I joined the Army as a weapons repairman but soon moved into a more appropriate field. The Army trained me to be a broadcast journalist. Disc jockey duties alternated with news writing, video camera and editing work, public affairs assignments and news anchor duties.

During my years as a soldier I lived in Missouri, California, Maryland, Georgia and Belgium. I also spent a couple of intense weeks in Israel during Desert Storm, covering the action with the Patriot missile crews and capturing scud showers on video tape. While enlisted I finished my BS at night and started my Masters, and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class. In my spare time, I started writing adventure and mystery stories set in some of the exotic places I'd visited.

After leaving the Army I continued to write military news for the Defense Department as a civilian. Today I handle media relations and write articles for military newspapers and magazines. I also teach writing classes at Anne Arundel Community College and am deeply involved with the writing culture. I'm a past president of the Maryland Writers Association and current president of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Virginia Writers club.

I've settled in Springfield VA with my lovely wife Denise and Princess the Wonder Cat.

        • For those who live nearby - Tomorrow night I join the Arlington Chapter of the Jaycees. Their monthly "Pizza Feast" begins at 7:30 pm, and it will be combined with a "Meet the Author Night," when I will discuss the process of writing crime fiction and mysteries. Aside from being able to meet me and get some signed novels, it's a great chance to find out about how you can get involved with this great organization of young adults in Arlington County. The meeting is in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Building, 4301 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA.

      • The long update
Yet another full week has sneaked past. I had a great Saturday at the all-day seminar "A World of Fiction Writing" at American University, jointly sponsored by Washington Independent Writers. The speakers were great, especially the web-savvy team on the "Writers' Blogs," panel, and my fellow authors on the genre writing panel.

I had to leave a little early to get to the Borders Books & Music in the Capital Shopping Mall. I spent two hours there signing copies of Blood and Bone. I got a great welcome from those folks and will surely go back... when they've had time to order more books.

Then Sunday I paid a second visit to the Borders Express at the Dulles Town Center. Paired with fellow crime novelist Rique Johnson, we became more of an improv comedy team than a pair of writers, but together we signed a pile of books.

      • The home team has spent the last week or so building a plan for 2008 intended to break my writing into the mainstream outside my home area. We ended up considering what seemed like hundreds of options, each with a long decision tree. Mailings? Sure, but to who? Where? When? How many? What will the postcard say? And that’s just one tiny bit of the puzzle. But we have arrived at a conclusion.

Arrived? We always make it sound as if a conclusion is a place. Well, maybe it is. It’s the place where you got tired of thinking.
