posted: RE: reasons to be a gangsterSome sociologists explain that since a few people cannot compete through education, sports, career, or any other legitimate activities, they try to find 'respect' through deviant activities like violence, robbery, vandalism, grafitti, and so forth. Some make a living though out of organized crime. It looks cool to own a couple of Tommy guns, raid a bank, splurge the money you stole by partying all night and so on. Of course, your life gets shorter. I used to be a streetgang member during summer vacations because I was simply bored. We didn't steal anything though nor did we peddle drugs. We played music on our guitars and keyboards, serenaded barrio lasses, and sometimes, we picked up fights tagged as 'sports lang suntukan tayo walang makikialam.' And it didn't really matter whether you won or lost a fistfight. What mattered was, you passed the time away to kill your boredom. Of course, college fraternities and rumbles are altogether different. The fights are on a bigger scale 25-50 participants per group. It is more technical and tactical with homemade bombs, improvised weapons, fight formations, and ambushes. Nowadays, being a gangster is more like a fashion statement with hiphop clothing, bling-blings, rap music, and dance moves. It' s still great to pass idle time away if you don't have anything to do. But when you go to jail because you hurled a grenade at a rival group, you'll surely spend a very long time behind bars with nothing much to do. ![]() wiki.arch.ethz.ch |
