Software Architect

Position Summary

Friendster is looking for an exceptional and highly motivated software architect with a strong track record of designing and developing multi-tiered web applications that are high quality, scalable, and reliable. We prefer generalists who have driven feature development at every layer of the stack.

As a key member of our engineering team, the Software Architect has broad responsibilities, including technical leadership, application design and development, project management, and cross-department communication and mentoring. To be successful, you need a deep understanding of social networking sites, development methodologies, common web and application architectures as well as strong analytical skills.

The Friendster operations and engineering team has divisions in Mountain View, California and the Philippines. Coordination between the two locations is an important part of our day-to-day routine and any successful applicant must be able to work with remote, as well as local, team members.

Key Responsibilities

• Define robust architectures for new applications, leveraging and enhancing existing building blocks or creating new reusable components. Monitor and review implementation of same.
• Provide technical leadership to the development team(s)
• Build early prototypes of product components and validate them for technical design and performance
• Understand the long-term business objectives and suggest technical strategies to meet those objectives
• Be responsive and decisive on adjusting our product architecture as customer requirements, market conditions, and technology evolve
• Partner with others, inside and outside the product development team, to gather requirements and formulate appropriate architecture, deciding when to advocate and when to compromise to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution
• Actively participate in the development process, as needed
• Provide any necessary support to operations and development teams to mitigate and fix site problems. Participate in and lead post-mortem analyses to aid with continual improvement in the areas of incident prevention and resolution.

Position Requirements

• 10+ years experience in application design with 3+ years as an architect
• Experience in an architect role on large-scale, distributed, web-based applications, particularly "owning" the design of portions of such a system.
• Comfortable in communicating architecture to all levels of management and customers
• Track record that includes the design and release of high-quality, high-performance software products / applications
• Strong analytical problem solving and decision making skills
• Strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Expert-level knowledge of application design and coding techniques, as well as a thorough understanding of installation, testing methodologies and troubleshooting techniques.
• Possessing skills in the following technology areas: PHP, C++, Web Services, XML, XSL, HTML, Javascript, Java, HTTP, SQL
• Extensive experience in any of the following is a plus: Apache, MySQL, memcached, Linux, mobile device integration (SMS and WAP)

Senior Application Security Engineer

Position Summary

The Friendster operations and engineering team has divisions in Mountain View, California and Makati City, in the Philippines. Key Responsibilities

• Advise site integrity group on engineering projects
• Evangelize security at Friendster
• Handle vulnerability assessment on Friendster web based products
• Review engineering project plans for security requirements
• Respond to site incidents
• Perform or manage code audits on Friendster code

Position Requirements

• Expertise in mitigating web threats (spam, botnets, phishing, web based fraud, web vulnerability, compromised accounts)
• Experience/Expertise with LAMP stack (linux, apache, mysql, php)
• Expertise in corporate web security best practices
• CISSP, IS degree, or equivalent experience recommended
• Policy/Compliance (PCI-DSS, ISO 27k) experience
• Strong experience in incident handling and response
• White hat or hacker mentality

Position Requirements

• Extensive experience building large-scale server applications
• Expert Knowledge of PHP
• Expert knowledge developing and debugging in C/C++ or Java on Unix-like systems. DHTML / XHTML / XSLT / CSS knowledge is desired
• Experience in one or more of the following areas is a definite plus: operating system internals, filesystems, programming language design, compilers, distributed systems, or server architectures.

User Interface Engineer

Key Responsibilities

• Work with designers to implement and maintain user-facing features for an audience of millions
• Ship products of the highest quality through strict attention to visual and interaction details
• Utilize and contribute to Friendster’s core UI libraries
• Code primarily using Javascript, HTML and CSS. Knowledge of PHP is highly desirable.
• Identify and communicate best practices for front-end engineering

Position Requirements

• Expertise in XHTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX.
• Ability to write well-abstracted, reusable code for common UI components in PHP and Javascript
• Ability to create interfaces that are fast, consistent across browsers, and demonstrate an intimate knowledge of browser quirks and best practices
• Extremely detail oriented down to pixel-perfect implementation
• Experience crafting efficient, optimized code
• Familiarity with common production-quality Javascript libraries, especially jQuery and YUI, a plus.

Systems Administrator

Position Summary

The Friendster operations and engineering team has divisions in Mountain View, California and the Philippines. The current position will be based in Mountain View.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with management of colocated servers
• Installation and testing of hardware and software
• Analysis of system logs to identify potential issues with systems
• Research and integration of new technologies into existing
• environment
• Creation or update of systems and software configuration
• Troubleshooting of reported problems
• System performance tuning
• Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation

Position Requirements

• Has strong inter-personal and communication skills: capable of training users in applications and Unix fundamentals. Able to write basic system documentation.
• High skill level with basic Unix commands and utilities.
• Familiar with most basic system administration tools and tasks. For example, can cleanly boot and shutdown the system, add and remove user accounts, use backup programs, perform fsck and maintain system database files (groups, hosts, aliases, etc.)
• Fundamental understanding of the functioning of the Unix operating system: for example understands job control, hard and soft linking, the difference between shell programs and kernel programs.
• Basic understanding of Unix security procedures
• Familiarity with networked/ distributed computing environments. For example: can use the route command or mount a remote filesystem.
• Ability to write functional scripts in an administrative language (shell, Perl, Python).
• Ability to type at least 25 wpm

Senior Account Manager

Position Summary

As a Senior Account Manager you will support the Sales Manager in achieving set sales targets in accordance with the corresponding media agencies and direct clients your team has been assigned.

Key Responsibilities

• Be capable of presenting to a client in a competent and professional manner and be able to close the relevant deal.
• Engage with senior management and operational stakeholders within key agency advertiser to maximize advertising spend.
• Proactively contact existing clients and cross-sell / up sell them on various products and services with the goal to improving their advertising campaign performance
• Provide world-class account management service in responding to general and specialised client requests via both phone and email, including billing inquiries, click activity inquiries, bidding and KPI requests, relevancy issues, etc.

Position Requirements

• Typically have 3- 5 years minimum proven experience in advertising sales and relevant contacts from within Media or SEM agency preferred.
• Engage with senior management and operational stakeholders within key Agency advertiser to maximize advertising spend.
• Proven track record of over-achieving on revenue targets.
• Outstanding computer skills including solid knowledge of spreadsheets (MS Excel), word processing (MS Word), power point presentation (MS PowerPoint) and CRM systems.
• Bachelor’s degree with top-class academics preferred.
• Have a clear understanding of online advertising and how it correlates to traditional media.
• Consultative selling skills define targets; work on prioritising relationships by listening and responding as well as being able to build thorough knowledge about allocated key agencies and their clients.

• Proven ability to develop relationships at multiple levels and multiple departments through establishing trust and reliability.
• Strong analytical skills and being able to translate numerical findings to support sales arguments.
